Studying in the UK means navigating a well-defined but detail-heavy visa process. This guide walks through the real steps, in order.
Before you apply
Make sure you have an unconditional offer from a licensed sponsor and a valid Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) number. You cannot submit a visa application without one.
Documents you need
Gather your passport, proof of funds covering tuition and living costs, and your CAS reference. Financial evidence usually needs to cover 28 consecutive days before the application.
Typical timeline
Most students apply 3 to 6 months before their course start date. Processing usually takes 3 to 8 weeks depending on the visa center.
During the application
The online form asks for biometric information and a scan of your documents. You will need to book an appointment at a visa application center to provide fingerprints and a photo.
After you arrive
Collect your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) within 10 days of arriving, and register with a doctor (GP) near your accommodation as soon as possible.
